Why FU Berlin?

FU Berlin Application Requirements

Bachelor's Programs

  • Direct Admission: The department you were placed into via the YKS must be equivalent to the department you want to study in Germany. A preliminary check via the Anabin database is mandatory.
  • Studienkolleg: If your high school diploma does not provide direct equivalence, you may need to attend Studienkolleg for one year and pass the FSP exam.

Master's Applications

In master's applications, the process is more specific, competitive and department-focused. In highly competitive departments, a competitive bachelor's grade point average (NC) and the compatibility of the ECTS credits on your transcript with the German curriculum are of great importance.

Language Proficiency Requirements

  • German: TestDaF (minimum 4x4), DSH-2, Goethe C2 or telc C1 Hochschule.
  • English: IELTS Academic minimum 6.5 (some competitive programs may require 7.0), TOEFL iBT minimum 90.
  • Politics and Social Sciences — The Otto Suhr Institute (OSI), one of Europe's largest political science centers.
  • Faculty of Medicine (Charité) — Europe's largest research hospital, jointly managed with Humboldt.
  • Business and Economics — A modern curriculum focused on data science and sustainability.
  • Natural Sciences — Enormous state funding and Cluster of Excellence programs.

Being a Student in Berlin (2026)

  • Accommodation (Dormitory / WG): 500 € — 850 €. Studierendenwerk dormitories are affordable but waiting lists are long.
  • Health Insurance: 120 € — 135 €.
  • Transportation: A wide network with the D-Ticket or Semesterticket.
  • Food and Social Life: 350 € — 500 €.
In Germany, international students have a legal work permit of 140 full days or 280 half days per year. Thanks to Berlin's start-up ecosystem, you can gain serious professional experience by working 20 hours a week under Werkstudent status.
